 History

On the recommendation of the Cattle Plague Commission, the Institute then known as the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory had its genesis on December 9, 1889 at Pune, and later relocated to Mukteshwar in 1893 to facilitate segregation and quarantine of highly contagious organisms. Later it was developed into the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), which later moved its headquarters to Izatnagar. Still Mukteshwar serves as the hill campus of IVRI, including various facilities such as an experimental goat farm. The noted nobel winner scientist Robert Koch visited this place on request of then GOI. The microscope used by him and other historical articles are kept in the museum maintained by IVRI.

Because of the hilly topography, agriculture in the area consists chiefly of potato fields and fruit orchards on terraces cut into the hillsides.
Robert Koch visited IVRI Mukteswar to work on cattle plague.

Culture dominates all aspects of its socio-cultural fabric, Mukteshwar is home to people of nearly all the religions and regions. One can find variety in all aspects from dishes to clothings and from dialect to architecture. A small town till about 2 decades ago, rapid urbanization due to a number of factors has contributed to its rise as a regional hub trading in modern amenities and a better infrastructure (roads, shopping centres and hospitals).

 Festival

Mukteshwar Dance Festival: The Mukteshwar Utsav of Orissa is one of the most well known festival those celebrated in the state. This festival is named after one of the most renowned temples of Orissa i.e. Mukteshwar Temple. The Mukteshwar Utsav in Orissa is mainly a dance festival, in which many talented Odissi dancers perform. This temple is a very important part of cultural life of the people of Orissa as the architecture at the temple entrance is considered to be one of the most beautiful specimens of the Orissan School of architecture. This temple signifies the transitional phase of the architecture of Orissa between the initial and the later stages of Kalinga architectural style. The beautiful architectural works of the temple add to the splendor of the Mukteshwar Utsav. This festival should not be missed by the people who take interest in the traditional dance forms of India. The festival is being organized by the Department of Tourism as part of Ekamra Utsav that is aimed at promoting Bhubaneswar as a major destination for cultural tourism. It will be an exclusive Odissi dance festival unlike the other festivals being organized by the Department. It would feature solo, duet and group presentations.
